WHAT IS PILOT LIGHT?

Pilot Light is a campaign focused on changing the way people think and act about mental health through addressing the industry specific contexts and environments found in professional kitchens and the broader hospitality sector.

Founded by Chefs Andrew Clarke and Doug Sanham, The campaign is unapologetically bold in its approach to combating mental health stigma and hopes to act as a beacon of support to those affected by common-place issues such as depression and addiction.

Why IS IT CALLED PILOT LIGHT?

Andrew Clarke explains: “When your pilot light goes out on the stove you can’t cook. The analogy being that we just want to keep the pilot light going. A pilot is also someone who can guide you.

It does feel like it’s limited to the kitchen and I don’t want it to be. We (chefs) are a massive voice in hospitality, but we are also a little broken voice which needs repairing.

I think we can lead the way to get people around the world talking about mental health which at the moment there is no solution to.”

WHAT DOES PILOT LIGHT DO?

Pilot Light was set up in November 2017 by Chef’s Andrew Clarke and Doug Sanham to open up the conversation about mental health within the hospitality industry globally.  in the Hospitality Sector to build an evidence base on which to develop our future plans.

  • We work with restaurants, hotels and suppliers, spreading the ethos of Pilot Light and raising awareness of our campaign. We also invite these organisations to sign up to a commitment showing their support for a change in the industry to create an environment where speaking openly about mental health problems is as normal as speaking about physical health problems.
  • Eliminating the stigma attached to these conversations is the first step in helping people who experience poor mental health.
  • We are working on training packages designed to address stigma in hospitality and we are working alongside other Mental Health organisations to achieve this. We want our support to be accessible to everyone which means we are trying to keep everything we produce free of charge.
  • Pilot Light hosts networking events and speaking sessions a with the aim of linking organisations and individuals who want to see positive change. At the moment these are London UK based but watch this space!
We cannot do this alone. We need your ideas, we need your connections. Together, we can create a community of like-minded professionals united by a common cause: to shine a light on these issues, and act as a beacon of support to those affected by them.
